Knitting, Crocheting
Sally’s mother taught her the basic crochet chain stitch at about 4 or 5, but she really learned knitting and crochet in the third grade. Some of the highlights of her knitting and crochet career include crocheting an afghan for a “talent show” in the 5th grade and finishing a granny square afghan started by her great grandmother in the 7th grade. She was featured in the Herrschner’s needlework catalog for being one of the youngest contestants in the Herrschner’s Grand National Afghan Contest when she was in the 7th or 8th grade. She participated in “A Knitted Wonderland”, a “yarn bombing” art installation in front of the Blanton Museum, in 2011. Later in 2014, she started volunteering as a knitting and crochet instructor at Englewood Estates, an assisted living facility near Sunset Valley. Sally has learned dabbled in other types of fiber arts and needlework, including spinning yarn, dying yarn, wet felting, needle felting, basic macramé (mainly friendship bracelets and survival bracelets), and needlepoint and cross stitch. Sally loves to reassure her students by reminding them her favorite thing about knitting “How many opportunities in life do you have to completely undo all your mistakes and start over?"
Mrs. Elisa
Spanish
Sra. Elisa is probably the only Georgia Alaruvian you will ever meet. Her father is from Alabama, her mother is Peruvian, and she grew up in Georgia. That meant dinner time included fried chicken y arroz (rice) with peach pie for dessert!! YUMMY! She moved to Texas in 2006 and became a certified bilingual early childhood educator. After 7 successful years of teaching, mentoring, and training others within Austin ISD, she had her first child, Myles, in 2014. At that point she decided to take her teaching passion in a new direction. She incorporated her most successful teaching tools like movement, music, technology, literature and a dash of humor and created a program called Bilingual Boogie to help children learn Spanish. She currently offers her classes at various preschools around south Austin and is very excited about joining the Mariposa Co-op
